Florida Lands in the Nation's Top 10 Best States to Live In
A new WalletHub analysis just ranked Florida No. 10 out of all 50 states, and the reasons behind that ranking are worth paying attention to if you're weighing a move to Tampa Bay. WalletHub scored every state across 51 measures spanning affordability, economy, education, health, quality of life, and safety, and Florida's strongest showing came in the category that matters most to everyday living.

  • Quality of life: No. 3 nationally. This was Florida's standout category, and it's the one buyers moving here consistently mention first.
  • Safety: No. 11 nationally. A solid showing that reinforces Florida's reputation as a secure place to put down roots.
  • Economy: No. 17 nationally. Reflects the state's continued job growth and business climate.
  • Education and health: No. 24 nationally. Middle of the pack, an area to research closely by specific county or school district.
  • Affordability: No. 32 nationally. The one category dragging down Florida's overall score.

That affordability number lines up with what many Tampa Bay buyers are already feeling. WalletHub ranked Florida's housing costs as the fourth-highest in the country, trailing only Nevada, Hawaii, and California. It's a real cost to factor in, but it's not the whole story. As WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo put it, the smart approach is to weigh cost of living and job availability alongside everything else a state offers.

That's exactly the calculation I walk through with clients here in South Tampa and across Hillsborough County. Yes, housing costs are higher than the national average. But that cost buys access to a quality of life that ranked third in the entire country, along with the safety and economic stability that keep people choosing Florida over lower-cost alternatives elsewhere. For a lot of buyers relocating from higher-tax, higher-cost-of-living states, Tampa Bay still comes out ahead even with the sticker price on housing.

If you're considering a move to the Tampa Bay area, or wondering whether now is the right time to buy given where housing costs currently stand, I'd love to help you look at the numbers for your specific situation.
